Visualizing air quality data through an interactive light installation

A Matter of Air is an interactive installation about environmental and public health policy. Using an array of 42 LED strings, it visualizes air pollution and its health consequences throughout New York City using NYC OpenData. Each string represents one neighborhood, and each LED represents a year in time. This immersive space allows users to move through an abstraction of NYC and see pollution data mapped around them.

This piece was selected for the annual DataXDesign 2023, organized by the City of New York.

The installation was also shown during the NYC design week 2023 at the Navy Yard as part of “Art as Information,” a collective exhibition on data visualization.

Longlisted for the Information is Beautiful Awards.
